Hedge funds are the hardest beat here to report on cleanly. A firm markets its return against an index that only counts funds still open, a strategy gets written up in language built so a rival can't reverse it, and most seats fill through a headhunter's call before any posting exists. The 13F everyone reads as a live portfolio is a U.S. long-only snapshot that can be six weeks stale and says nothing about shorts or anything held abroad. A number that's a market estimate, not something the fund confirmed, gets labeled that way — not dressed up as fact.
